Sagardoa is the euskera name for cider. This product is strongly connected to basque culture and history. During the 16th century, Basque sailors wewre the strongest at Cantabrian Sea and cider was their medicine against “the plague of the sea”, a disease which was caused by a Vitamin C deficiency,
Thanks to this great consumption of cider at boats, numerous cider houses where built next to the sea along the basque coast. Nowadays, there is a yearly tradition of visiting cider houses in spring, to try fresh cider and paired with a fixed menu.
